Storytelling

Ansell has been a storyteller for several decades working in Nurseries, schools, libraries, community setting, international festivals and radio.

Over the decades young people (some now adults with children of their own), have enjoyed Ansell’s unique participatory style of performance storytelling.

Known affectionately by many as Mr Mandingo, or Mr B, children and adults alike have been alike have been enthralled by Ansell’s folkloric, fun, allegorical and sometimes edgy storytelling. filled with music, song and participatory dance

Ansell may come to your establishment for a day and kindle great excitement, or work with you for a week leading up to a carnival type exposé of your school/group/participants experience, contributions and talents (as an example).  

With a background in TIE (Theatre In Education) Ansell has decades of experience of working closely with teachers to integrate stories into curricular work such as English, art, music and even maths.

Writing and directing

A member of the writers guild Ansell has been commissioned for and written many plays. A fair few of which he’s also directed.
From pantomimes to science fiction, African Theatre to thriller, Ansell’s writing and direction has covered much ground. With a distinctive style that lets you know, “Ansell was here,” his delivery affects you viscerally.
 
Ansell has also been commissioned to write pieces for mental health, Cancer research, Adult & young people’s health and schools organisations.
Ansell is available for commission for all kinds of writing.
 
Also working in schools and other creative/educational facilities, Ansell has run workshops, projects, and writing residences nationally. e.g.,  Arvon Foundation, local authorities and youth offenders services.

Drumming workshops (and beyond)

Ansell is available as a percussionist for.
  • Drumming workshops (African and Caribbean drums)
  • Studio recording sessions
  • Musical theatre work
  • Music consultation work (for people who want to commission music compositions), in theatre, film or radio.

Ansell has years of experience and has toured extensively as a percussionist, taking him to Europe, the Caribbean and Africa.

Ansell offers drumming workshops that would enable participants to:-
  • Get hands on experience, using a range of African/Caribbean drums
  • Learn how to express themselves using drums
  • Use their minds to control what their body is doing
  • Develop timing
  • Learn how to listen to others around them 
  • Communicate with others rhythmically
  • Get some historical and cultural context for the rhythms, songs and drums they’re playing
  • Get high on rhythm
  • Feel good and feel accomplished
  • Have some fun
 
Drum workshops are usually available in half or whole day sessions.
